IMO, you need to be consistent and stand firm. I would send written notice to the ex that you will handle and pay any living expenses directly between you and your son and any expenses she opts to pay on her own will not be reimbursed by you. Then let your son know that he must come directly to you for anything he expects you to pay for. Then stand your ground.

I suspect he'll catch on really quick if he doesn't get what he wants until he goes through the proper channels. He's no longer a child dependent upon mom to dole out the child support as she sees fit.
The person who cares the least controls the relationship.
