The kids on the ex-'s new husband's insurance

Postby dr_white » Sat Jun 02, 2012 5:48 pm

This was a new one for me. The ex- sent me an email saying that she wants to change dentists so that her new husband can use his work insurance as a secondary insurance for our kids. One of my thoughts was that it might border on insurance fraud since the kids aren't his dependents. Another thought was that they are doing this as a ploy to try and show that the new husband is supporting the kids instead of me. I currently provide primary insurance for the kids. Have others come across this one?

I've had step kids on my insurance. Many do. It's not fraud and it doesn't mean they are trying to prove you are not supporting the kids.

It's a way to save some money.

Is there a need for secondary insurance? Does she keep you in the loop about the kids medical info and access your insurance for the kids primary care? If she DOES, then I wouldnt worry. If she DOESNT, then I woud be asking questions..

Im paying for my kid's medical insurance (in the court order) and the ex is using Medicaid/not reporting my insurance. Apparently this is not even considered fraud lol.

does she pay for a portion of dental expenses?
if you pay all-there's no need to change.

Happens all the time. If orders state that both parents must carry insurance on the children of the marriage, if parent is on new spouse's insurance plan...why not? The court just wants to make sure kids are taken care of in that regard, whether it be your insurance or new stepmom's. My office has *terrible* insurance plan, so I had the kids on Medicaid and just went without myself for two years until I got remarried, and new wife had them on her family plan within a week. NJ still hasn't gotten them on a plan.

FOF, favorite avatar of yours yet. Just sayin

And having step-kids on your insurance is completely normal. All the kids in our blended family are on mine. As long as your ex and he are married, there's nothing wrong with it.

I insure my step son. His dad does too. Many companies require whoever is court ordered to cover the kids to be the primary. Mine does. So his insurance covers the majority, my insurance will ONLY kick in on something over the amount his won't pay, assuming of course my insurance covered it as well.

Anyway, if you are court ordered to carry insurance make sure.you do even if they use his.
