Lawyers are like car salesman

I've had the same lawyer since 2009 but I've moved so I started calling around. I wanted representation and I forgot how slimy some lawyers can be. I called three and received three completely different price quotes:

1. "I can do it for a $1000 flat fee."

2. "I can do it for a $2500 retainer." I make some noises to indicate his price was a little steep. "Well, I'll be at the courthouse that day so if price is an issue I can work with you." Ok, thanks. Bye. Four minutes later he calls back and says, "I can do it for a flat fee of $1500 since I'll be there anyway."

3. "I need a retainer of $3500. It may take two-three trips to court to finally come to a resolution. Whatever money we don't use, you get back."

Even though lawyer #3 was the highest, he seemed the most candid. I hate trying to negotiate a price. Just tell me what your price is and I'll either take it or not. Don't hem and haw about it to see where my comfort range is. It's almost exactly like buying a car and in some cases, the lawyer costs more than the car! Except you don't get to suck in the new car smell.....that would just be weird

Lawyers and car salesmen are exactly alike. I hate both of them.
