I don't think you can trust something unless there have been multiple published studies done on it. Unfortunately, drug companies make too much money (many billions per year) on psychoactive drugs prescribed to minors (and adults) to care much about funding studies that make their medicine worthless.
There are some interesting studies done on diet that were conducted properly that show very strong correlations between milk protein and cancer, for example. Check out the movie, forks over knives. I started eating the way they recommend and have seen a noticeable improvement in my mood.
Best think is to just try it out and keep a journal of what you eat and any noticeable effects. Do something like this: Get two jars, label one "Good day" and one "Bad day". If your subject has a good day, put a bean in the good day jar. If he has a bad day, put one in the bad day jar. That is your control. Then change the diet and start doing it again a week after that and follow through for a month or so and you'll see if there are marked differences.
Nothing wrong with finding out what works good for you.
