Nothing to do with divorce/custody but want to make sure

I'm in the right here.

I'm renting a house currently. Lease ran out November 1st. I chose not to sign another one, and started looking for another place that fits our needs better and is closer to things. Back in April of last year, one of our vehicles was broken into in the driveway and access to the garage was gained by the stupid garage door opener they found in it. A bunch of things were taken, police report was done, things were dusted for prints, the whole 9. The management company for the property sent their maintenance man out to reprogram the new key chain remotes *I* bought from Home Depot, even though I could have done that, I figured they wanted their guy to do it. Fast forward to this past saturday, went to look at another house, nice house, great neighborhood etc. Same price as i'm paying here. Get home to a letter from the current property management company that says I'm responsible for the goober coming out to and do basically nothing! This is the first I have heard of this, and it just so happens to come after I don't renew my lease. I looked through my current lease and it says no where in it that the tenant is responsible for any maintenance, emergency or otherwise. Also not getting a bill from April until December is very odd. The lady in the office says it's because they just switched accounting people because the other wasn't getting invoices out. Again, not my problem.

Basically they are saying if I don't pay it they'll take it out of my security deposit, which I need for the next place. So i'm looking at having to fight them in court. But before it gets there, is there something I'm missing??

Sort of similar story?

When I moved into the current house everything seemed to be in order but it wasn't long before the kallway bathroom was slow flushing. Then it stopped up. I'm a handy guy, haven't rented in 15 years and could have fixed it but figured it was something the landlord would take care of. Called landlord.

Plumber comes out and has to take off the toilet.

Pulls out an action figure, a slinky, a ball.

The next month I get a bill for 120 bucks.

I had 5 kids living in the house, I wasn't even going to bother attempting to explain "My kids didn't do it" and I paid the bill.

In your case, I would think that the bill incurred as a result of the break in would be covered under your renters insurance. Maybe?
