a way to save and output texts.

Postby dad_76904 » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:33 pm

i saw someone in another post ask about how to save texts, and i thought i'd share.

I have an android phone. there's a free app called "SMS Backup and Restore". very very simple to use. literally 1 click and it outputs to an xml file with time and date stamps. I used this in my divorce and my lawyer thought it was pretty slick.

in case anyone needs it, go get it!

Delete all other texts before performing backup. Then you know they're all gonna read nutty.

It usually backs up in groupings, so your STBX/X's texts will all be together. Just find the first and the last and copy/paste.

Or you can search for

<sms protocol="0" address="_________"

___ being the 10 digit number your looking for. Then find the beginning of each text to copy/paste. But that seems like way to much work unless all else fails.

ouch.

I can't find a variable for the search string that will get you all, or even each full text. I think the backup file has too many symbols that mess with the search.

I might also make a copy of the file and start butchering all other texts out of that doc. Hopefully ending up with one full backup and one of just nuttiness.

I downloaded something called Iphone SMS export (I think it was $15-20). It was worth every penny though. It pulled up a listing of every text individually (in chronological order) and allows you to select only the texts you want (i.e. can exclude texts by date from people that you don't need). I would imagine that they have something like this out there for android phones as well.

Alright Bman! Way to work with what you got.

Good info bubbaG - SMS Backup does not have this option (and Bman did not have his cel)

Note: Check evidence for ease of use prior to archiving.
