How can I find out what is legal and what isn't in my state (CA)? I want to record everything, and I do write everything down, but I want to get a recorder and use it. Does anybody know what the laws are or how to find them out, for CA? I talked to a cop friend and he said I can't record without the other party's consent. But I think there must be other rules.

Can I record in my own house or on my own property? Can I just record without telling anybody, and keep it in case I need it? If she accuses me of something and I have a recording, can I use it to defend myself even though I got the recording without her consent?

Bingo.

Just know that illegally obtained evidence might not get you out of trouble and it is also evidence that you committed a crime.

But if you have it and no one knows, you get to decide if and when it ever gets used.

My ex NJ is crazy to the point that her own mother has a recorder going when she has to deal with her. You bet I'm doing the same thing.

If there wasn't so much pain and destruction inherent in those words, that'd be a really funny sentence.

NJ's alternative lifestyle sister (don't get excited guys; she gets called "sir" more often than not), also bats**t crazy, trying to sue for custody for her 17 year old brother from ex in laws, apparently using NJ's slimy lawyer boyfriend's "connections", both she and NJ fabricating stories about physical abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, etc. Judge dismissed it straight out. NJ doesn't talk to them at all anymore, *I'm* the one who makes sure the kids gets any time with that set of grandparents. It really is sad, but telling.

Start recording yesterday. Head off her being able to accuse you of ANYTHING.

I use a recorder for the simple reason that it's solely for that purpose, so no chance of me accidentally erasing something I have stored on the phone. Specific tool for specific purpose.
